Tanzania looking at signing MoU for tourism with India

United Republic of Tanzania is looking at signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India for co-operation in infrastructure and Human Resource development in the tourism sector. The two governments are currently drafting the details of the MoU and will soon sign the agreement. Tanzania government is also keen on Air India re-starting a direct flight between India and Tanzania. Currently this flight is routed via Kenya. In addition Tanzania government plans to bring a representative from Tanzania in the near future to work with the Embassy of Tanzania in India and promote tourism. They are currently keen on establishing themselves in the Indian market. They are also focusing on promoting Tanzania in India through tour operators and are looking forward at working closely with the Indian travel trade.

Speaking to TravelBiz Monitor, Shamsa Selengia Mwangunga, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, United Republic of Tanzania said, “We are keen on signing the MoU as soon as possible. We have also urged the Tourism Minister in India to start a direct flight to our country. Non-availability of direct air connections to Tanzania is a hindrance to tourism. The Air India flight routed via Kenya to our country puts us at a disadvantage as tourists get off at Kenya and spend their foreign exchange there.”

Ambika Soni, Minister of Tourism, Government of India has assured Mwangunga of conveying the message of a direct flight to Tanzania to the concerned ministry. The Minister of Infrastructure for Tanzania will also initiate talks with Praful Patel, Minister of Civil Aviation regarding the direct flight.
