Ministry of Tourism to develop Amritsar as a major tourist destination

Ministry of Tourism (MoT), recently decided to develop Amritsar as a major tourist destination as per its project development programme. The project development in Amritsar will cost around Rs 25 crore, of which Rs 15 crore has already been sanctioned by MoT. The remaining ten crore will be sanctioned after the utilisation of the sanctioned amount of Rs 15 crore. Apart from Amritsar, MoT will also work towards developing Agra, Aurangabad, Puri-Bhubaneshwar-Konark-Chilka Lake in Orissa, Hyderabad and Varanasi-Sarnath. A meeting of members of Planning Commission, Finance Department, MoT and state tourism departments for discussing issues related to the development projects will be held on June 27, 2008 in Delhi.

The development project of Amritsar stresses on improving areas surrounding heritage buildings, illuminating historic buildings, constructing pavements, conducting sound and light shows in Gobindgarh Fort, providing public amenities and improving road connectivity. Apart from this, the project mentions relocation of the Municipal Corporation office, which is located at Town Hall, a historic building. Town Hall in turn, will be conserved and developed as an attraction and will display maps and documents on places of tourist interest. The mega project will also include traffic management plan for managing the increasing tourist traffic inflow in the city.
