IGI Airport to offer ‘Delhi bazaar’ next month at new Terminal 1 D

Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is all set to offer its passengers the experience of a ‘Delhi bazaar’ next month at the new Terminal 1 D. According to airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), retail in terminal 1D will include a range of Indian souvenirs and destination merchandise, besides accessories and clothing. There will be four or five casual dining units, two coffee outlets, and a fine dining room. Sources said the new plan will also include a strong focus on Indian fast food, which has proven to be a success as per consumer research. According to a report in Expressindia.com by Geeta Gupta, Andrew Harrison, Chief Operating Officer, DIAL said, “We have received good response from retailers from all over the world. The shopping experience at the new terminal is all set to enhance passenger experience. We plan to offer passengers the experience of a Delhi bazaar, with a lively, close-knit and colourful shopping space.”

Sources said the shopping space will have lotus canopies in bronze colour, with some seven of them bunched together to provide a ‘market feel’. An airport official said, “We expect a big rise in spending per passenger with the opening of terminal 1D next month. The concept is in line with the Mumbai Airport.” According to a survey done by DIAL last year, at least 60 per cent shoppers across duty-free outlets at Asian airports were Indians. “The survey has helped us understand our passengers better,” said the official.

Arun Arora spokesperson of DIAL said passengers travelling on longer routes spend a lot of time at the airport, and the outlets would aim to attract them. “We also have plans for duty-based retail outlets at the new terminal’s waiting lounge. The plan is to give a unique shopping experience to passengers, who end up waiting several hours, at times after checking in,” added Arora. While Gurcharan Bhatura, an aviation expert and director-general of the Foundation for Aviation and Sustainable Tourism said, “If each passenger finds things of her/his need at the new terminal, it will add further value to the survey and push up satisfaction levels, like it did for the new Hyderabad Airport.”

Significantly, in its survey of 105 international airports, the international body Airports Council International (ACI) has put IGI at the 98th rank in terms of customer satisfaction. But aviation experts said once upgraded, the Delhi Airport will be able to turn around before the Commonwealth Games next year. ACI had done the particular survey between October and December 2008. Bhatura said since one of the important factors affecting passenger satisfaction is a terminal’s capacity, the new IGI terminal will ‘certainly make passengers feel more comfortable’ since it offers additional capacity.
