Turkish Airlines eager to increase frequency and destinations in India

Turkish Airlines is eager to increase its frequency from Indian destinations and add more destinations depending upon the outcome of the bilateral between the Directorate Generals of Civil Aviation (DGCAs) of both countries. The bilateral, which was scheduled for the first week of this month, had to be deferred for various reasons. The airline will also look at connecting value-added destinations of Turkey with Indian destinations once frequencies are added. The airline will partner with Turkish Tourism, which recently opened an Indian representation, for promoting Istanbul as an all round destination in the Indian market.

“We expect the DGCAs of the both countries to meet soon. There’s a lot of interest on both the sides about the outcome of the bilateral. So far, Turkey has been promoted as a MICE destination in the Indian market. The country has a lot to offer for leisure travellers. Moreover, it’s a backpacker’s heaven,” said Lokesh Bardia, Manager – Sales and Marketing – India, Turkish Airlines. Currently, Turkish Airlines operates seven flights a week from India, four flights a week from Delhi and three flights a week from Mumbai, to Istanbul. “As a destination, it is the biggest handicap that we have less seat capacity to offer. If there’s a favourable decision at the bilateral, we can fly daily from Mumbai and Delhi,” he added.

Turkish Airlines will add 25 new aircraft to its capacity by 2010. The new aircraft will be a combination of Boeing 737/ 330 and Boeing 340. The airline will also take up comprehensive refurbishment of its fleet once the frequencies are increased. “It doesn’t make sense taking up refurbishment until the frequencies are increased,” said Bardia. Flights of Turkish Airlines have been operating with 95 per cent load factor. In India the airline gets 65 per cent of the traffic from metros like Delhi and Mumbai and remaining 35 per cent from other parts of the country. “We consider Pune and Kolkata as good prospective markets for Turkey,” concluded Bardia.
