TAAB to position West Bengal as a tourism brand

In a bid to augment the volume of varied tourism businesses in Bengal, Travel Agents Association of Bengal (TAAB) plans to position Bengal as a significant tourism brand in the country. The Association is keen on developing internal branding of Bengal Tourism by promoting tourism products. TAAB, with membership strength of approximately 150 members, will discuss the issue at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in mid-August. TAAB is already in talks with the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) to create unique tourism products and the overall expansion of business.

Elaborating on the tourism business in West Bengal, Suddhabrata Deb, Joint Secretary, TAAB said, “The state stands second in terms of revenue generated by the domestic tourism market, while it is on the top with regards to sales by retail tour operators. The tourism industry here caters to the masses, as well as the elite. People belonging to all income groups in Bengal spend on tours. Tourism business is generated by numerous big and small retail tour operators. This is perhaps the only state which has a hotel tariff bracket starting from Rs. 400 to Rs. 8,000.” TAAB also plans to bring more tour operators under the umbrella of the Association. “Although we want to build membership strength, we do not want to grant membership to all and sundry. We intend to give accreditation to small and genuine tour operators and want to educate them on all required tourism-related rules,” Deb informed.

TAAB, which has always been actively promoting Responsible Tourism, made strong effort to save tourism trade in North Bengal during the recent political unrest by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) in demand of a separate state. “We were the prime Association in North Bengal to conduct bilateral talks with the GJM. In order to save the effect of the civil disorder on the general face of tourism in this region, we have planned to hold our Annual General Meeting this year in the Dooars and the theme will be ‘Destination North Bengal or ‘Dooars’.” As a measure to promote Responsible Tourism, TAAB is also plans to start a grievance cell and wants to make Kolkata the Gateway of South Asia. “We are supporting the government’s ‘Look East Policy’ through our tourism business,” concluded Deb.
