North India Tourism Bhawan to come up at Chandigarh

At a recent meeting held in Chandigarh, the Chandigarh Tourism Advisory Committee (CTAC) decided to set up a North India Bhawan to promote tourism in the Northern Region. It was also decided in the meeting, held under the Chairmanship of Jasbir Singh Bir, Secretary, Chandigarh Tourism that improvement was required at the ground level and attempts should be made to bring four states together for tourism promotion. CTAC wants to promote Chandigarh as a world-class tourism destination and also promote entertainment events in the city by collaborating with embassies and missions of various countries on a constant basis to boost mutually important areas of the tourism sector.

The meeting suggested the promotion of North India as a whole with an integrated effort by the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. Also suggested was formation of two committees headed by Jaspreet Talwar, Special Secretary, Punjab Tourism, for coordination among the states and the Union Territory and Vivek Atray, Director, Department of Tourism, Chandigarh for addressing the problems of local hoteliers.

Issues relating to connectivity to Chandigarh were also discussed at the meeting. Members of the committee said that a proposal will be made to add more buses, another Shatabdi Express and also increase the number of flights operating to the city. Setting up a telecom centre at the airport is also being considered to provide better facilities to tourists. Publicity of the right kind for major tourist spots, reasonable package prices, setting up an information centre in the Capitol Complex, improving taxi and auto services within the city and promoting Medical Tourism for foreign visitors were other issues discussed at the meeting. Entry points of the city will also be aesthetically designed.
