Malaysia to offer discounted weekend packages to IT companies in Bangalore

Tourism Malaysia plans to tap software companies in India’s technology capital, Bangalore by offering discounted holiday packages. It will also arrange travel loans for the IT companies with the help of banks. Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) has tied up with Singapore Airlines to offer these packages from Bangalore as a point of origin. The packages, priced at 25,999 per passenger for three nights and four days, include travel to any five destinations in Malaysia, return airfare, airport transfers, accommodation in star hotels with breakfast and half-day sight seeing. Similar holiday packages from Delhi are already in place. The five destinations include Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

The Board has already approached software major Wipro with an offer to provide discounted holiday packages for the company’s employees and is in talks with ICICI Bank and Canara Bank to provide travel loans. “Indians are among the top spenders in Malaysia, with tourism revenues from Indian tourists alone amounting to USD 1.13 billion in 2007. Rising crude oil prices have already pushed up air fares. This, along with rising living costs due to double-digit inflation, will see a number of Indians defer leisure travel plans. Competitive pricing will be the key to ensure that Indians continue to visit Malaysia,” said Manoharan, Director, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board.

Manoharan said that MTPB expects at least 4,000 tourists to buy these packages in this month and the next. Last year, over four lakh Indian tourists visited Malaysia and about five lakh tourists are expected to visit this year. Tourism revenue generated from visiting Indians is expected to go up by almost 30 per cent. “We want to popularise Malaysia, beyond Kuala Lumpur, for short breaks. We chose Singapore Airlines because they operate more flights to the country than Malaysian Airlines. These initiatives will help us realise our target of one million visitor arrivals from India by 2010-2011,” added Manoharan. Singapore Airlines operates 10 weekly flights between Bangalore and Singapore and 58 from eight cities in India. The airline proposes to have 65 weekly flights out of India by October this year.
