Kerala Tourism to set up hospitality management institute in Kozhikode

To strengthen the Human Resource sector of the booming tourism industry, Kerala Tourism will set up a hospitality management institute, called, ‘State Institute of Hospitality Management’ in Kozhikode. The state tourism department has received approval from Ministry of Tourism (MoT), as well a sanction of Rs ten crore for the project. Apart from this, even the state government has earmarked an investment of Rs 5.65 crore, for the project. The land for the institute has been identified. Though, the campus will be operational in three years, Kerala Tourism will start classes with a batch of 45 students from the fourth of next month, with a temporary campus at Yatri Niwas in Kozhikode.

“The institute will initially offer a three year BSc degree in hospitality and follow the syllabus prepared by the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, which is an autonomous body under the MoT,” said Dr. Venu V, Secretary, Kerala Tourism. The institute will offer both, long term, as well as short term courses to develop skills for people already working for the industry. After the construction of the institute, the tourism department will open itself to tie up with an international university to offer quality courses in the hospitality industry. Kerala Tourism also plans to offer post graduation courses, once the institute is operational.

The tourism department is also looking at upgrading the current Food Craft Institutes in Kerala. There are about nine such institutes which will be upgraded with new equipment, infrastructure and laboratories. “We have received the approval and sanction from the MoT for three institutes and are in the process to send the proposal for the up gradation of other institutes,” informed Dr. Venu. Last year, Kerala Tourism initiated the ‘Lets Learn Programme,’ which aimed at capacity building and up gradation of personnel skills. While the programme was conceptualised with inputs from consultants and trade, the course was designed by HR institutes like Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS) and the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (IHMCT) in Kovalam.
