British Airways takes a tough stand on climate change

British Airways (BA) will tackle the issue of climate change head-on by pushing forward a slew of changes that demonstrate how much airlines and big business can do to lessen their impact on the environment. According to a release from the airline, BA, along with its recycling schemes, has saved over 60,000 tonnes of CO2 in just two years by flying shorter routes over China and Brazil, refining landing and take off procedures and fitting new seats to A320 aircraft.

At the recently held Farnborough Air Show, Willie Walsh, CEO, British Airways said, “We at British Airways have been taking climate change issues seriously for a long time. A decade ago, we became the first airline to recognise the importance of environmental performance by publishing fuel efficiency targets. We set a target to achieve 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency by 2010, compared with 1990. By the end of last year, we had achieved a 28 per cent improvement, preventing the release into the atmosphere of an additional 60 million tonnes of CO2. We have now set a fresh target - to improve fuel efficiency by a further 25 per cent by 2025, compared with 2005.”

BA, according to the release is the only airline in the world to have participated in a voluntary carbon trading scheme – which has seen the airline cut its UK emissions by 23 per cent. BA has set itself a demanding new target to improve the fuel efficiency of its fleet by 25 per cent by 2025. This might sound optimistic, but it’s worth remembering that BA has already improved its fuel efficiency by 28 per cent since 1990.

In addition, British Airways has been working on reducing emissions through modifying operational procedures for all British Airways aircraft.
