Air Astana to increase frequency from Delhi to Almaty from August, 2008

Air Astana, Kazakhstan's national carrier, will increase its present twice a week service from Delhi to Almaty to thrice a week, starting August this year. Owing to the increasing business and student traffic to Almaty, the carrier is looking at starting a fourth flight for its winter schedule. The central role played by Kazakhstan in Eurasia makes it easier to export jointly produced goods and services to the fast expanding markets of China, Central Asia, Russia and further to Europe and Indian companies such as Punj Lloyd, Kirolskar, Punjab National Bank, NIIT and Larsen and Toubro.

Air Astana is 51 per cent owned by the Kazakhstani government and 49 per cent by BAE Systems of UK. “We have elaborate plans to boost both, tourism and aviation industry of Astana, the new capital city of Kazakhstan. In a short span of ten years, Astana has emerged as a political, economic and cultural center of the Eurasian country," said Dr Kairat Umarov, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to India.

Kazakhstan’s economy has been witnessing ten per cent growth at an average, for the last eight years. Its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita jumped from USD 400 in the 90s to USD 7,000 in 2008. Despite the Spiraling Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, Air Astana was recently declared as the fourth largest growing airline in the world by Airline Business magazine. “We have no plans to slow down our aggressive fleet campaign. Two Airbus, A-320 will be delivered in the next two months taking the fleet size of Air Astana to 21,” said Peter Foster, President, Air Astana.

80 representatives of the Kazak industry including tour operators, investors, hotels and government officials attended a presentation recently in Astana addressed by India's Ministry of Tourism (MoT). "We will like to have a luxury train on the Silk Route similar to India's luxury trains including the ‘Palace on Wheels’ for which we will consider joint partnerships to improve the quality of our product," said Kairbek Uskenbayev, Vice Minister Tourism and Sports.
