Aeroflot Russian Airlines to increase frequency from Mumbai

Aeroflot Russian Airline, the national carrier of Russia which connects Moscow to Delhi and Mumbai is looking at increasing its frequency from Mumbai by summer 2009, depending upon the availability of the aircraft. As per plans, the frequency will be doubled from thrice a week to six times a week. The airline is also considering increasing awareness about Russia as a destination by working in conjunction with Russian Tourism for promotional activities.

Talking to TravelBiz Monitor, Dr Igor V Ivliev, General Manager – India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Srilanka, Aeroflot Russian Airlines mentioned, “At present, we use the Boeing 767 and Illyushin 96 for its India operations. Depending upon the availability of Airbus 330 aircraft and increase in the fleet, we plan to double the frequency on the Mumbai – Moscow route next year. Also we are open to commencing operations from tier II cities in India, but it is completely dependent on increase in load factors.”

He further maintained that the airline is interested in working in coordination with Russian tourism to promote Russia as a destination in India. “Russia is more like a connecting destination for Indian tourists who travel to Europe and end up going to St. Petersburg. The volumes of Indian tourists to Russia are very low, which variate in between three to four thousand annually. The primary reason for this is that Russia is an expensive country as also it is not very well developed,” Ivliev further added.

Considering that maximum number of Indians traveling to Russia are students going there to pursue education, Aeroflot Russian Airlines already offers discounted student fares and is also contemplating to come up more such schemes to attract bigger volumes of students. The main season for Indian tourists to fly to Russia is from May to September.
