Tourist inflow to Bhitarkanika National Park declines due to recession, impact of terror attacks

The financial meltdown and recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai has taken a toll on the tourist footfalls in the famed Bhitarkanika National Park, Orissa. According to forest officials, around 8,000 tourists visited the Bhitarkanika National Park last year, while the count stood at 12,000 in 2007. Sources informed UNI news agency that this year till date only 189 foreign tourists visited the park against 1,200 during the corresponding period previous year. Bijen Swain, a tour operator of Chandabali, said the tourist inflow to the Park experienced a downward slope following the recession. An insult to the injury was added by the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, he added. Echoing similar sentiments, Economist Gangadhar Sahu, estimated that nearly 40 per cent of the annual revenue will be lost in the wake of the crisis. He felt that the Indian hospitality sector was laid low when it started gaining recognition worldwide. “'Unhealthy behaviour of the locals also frustrates tourism to a large extent,'' he added.
