Goa Carnival celebrations to be held from February 21-24, 2009

The Goa Carnival has become a big tourist attraction with large number of visitors coming from different parts of the country. According to a report in Times of India (ToI), Shyam Satardekar, Chairperson, Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) informed that this year’s Carnival will be held from the 21-24 of this month. The state government will step in and will put up floats of its own in every category for the first time.

Addressing a press conference yesterday Satardekar said that Panaji will kick off the festivities on February 21, 2009. The following day will see Margao celebrating the carnival, with the port town of Vasco scheduled to conduct the parade on February 23, 2009. Mapusa will keep the tradition and host the last day of the carnival festival with the floats set to parade through the Bardez town on February 24, 2009. This year's carnival parade will see no participation by foreign troupes but will see maximum participation from the people.

Each event will be allowed only if minimum participants’ criteria are complied with. The traditional floats will have to comprise 30 persons and above, club and institutions 30 persons and above, sponsored category 40 persons and above, family category six persons and above, Fun Junk Car category two persons and more and clown/jokers one or more persons. All categories have prizes up to the fifth place. Traditional float winners will take home Rs 60,000, club/institution winners - Rs 50,000, family floats - Rs 10,000; junk car - Rs 10,000 and clown/jokers - Rs 5,000. The state government has earmarked around Rs 1.25 crore for carnival and shigmo, which is to be distributed equally for both the festivities.
