Centre parts with funds for Goa’s tourism projects

The central government yesterday released funds for tourism projects in Goa that the state claims will cost around Rs 72 crore. Lyndon Monteiro, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Francisco Mickky Pacheco, Tourism Minister, Goa revealed this information at a press conference called to announce the carnival celebrations. Monteiro said that the state government had consistently pursued the matter with the centre for the last nine months. According to a report in Times of India (TOI), Monteiro said that these were due to the state almost five years ago. It was our efforts over the last few months that have paid off. Swapnil Naik, Tourism director, Goa is in Delhi and has completed the formalities.

Monteiro added that Rs 48 crore of the estimated cost of the projects would be given by New Delhi, while the rest would come from the state government's coffers. The projects include a Paryatan Bhavan (travellers home), upgradation of the Santa Monica jetty, creation of tourism centres along the Mandovi and Zuari rivers, beautification of the old Goa heritage complex and a couple of other projects. He added that the Centre's funding for most of the projects will be up to 100 per cent. The Paryatan Bhavan, a state government project conceptualised almost a decade ago, will bring a host of nodal tourism agencies under one roof. The building is slated to house the department of tourism, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), offices of tourism development corporations of other states and the tourist office of the Government of India. Besides this there will be airline offices, a conference room, ATMs and a cafeteria at the complex.
