TTDC to explore Rural Tourism potential in Tamil Nadu

Having assessed the huge potential in the state, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) is keen to promote Rural Tourism in Tamil Nadu in a big way. The idea is to give tourists the feel of village life and develop the local economy. The project, which is called GoI-UNDP Endogenous Tourism Project, was initiated by the Government of India (GoI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at a national level wherein the state tourism departments promote Rural Tourism in their respective states. The funding for these projects will be provided by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) in association with UNDP. TTDC has also brought out a detailed brochure on Rural Tourism. Tamil Nadu state government will also provide assistance in the form of funds to these Rural Tourism initiatives.

The Corporation has initiated several initiatives to promote tourism in the rural areas. It has already got the sanction for developing areas such as Kazhgumalai in Thootukudi district at a cost of Rs 68.68 lakh, Chettinadu in Sivagangai district at an investment of Rs 70 lakh, Theerthamalai in Dharmapuri district at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, Devipattinam in Ramnad district at an investment of Rs 50 lakh, Thirukurungudi and Thirupudaimaruthur in Tirunelveli district at a cost of Rs 100 lakh, Kuranguani in Theni district at an investment of Rs 50 lakh and Thadiyankudisai in Dindigul district at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. TTDC has already designed packages such as Thandarai Tour and Kadambadi Tour. Tourists will be taken in a bullock cart into the village while the houses will serve as resting areas. They can take part in agricultural activities, get oil massages, go to the temple for poojas and even cook traditional South Indian dishes. Camping, farm tours, fishing, hunting, horse riding, boating, hiking, biking, nature walk, traditional dancing, ethnic shopping and harvesting are some of the activities on offer for tourists visiting these areas.

TTDC is also promoting private initiatives by NGOs and Self-help Groups in areas such as Vanur Taluk, Thandarai, Dakshina Chitra, Chettinadu and heritage areas such as Kanadukathan and Pilliarpatti. It is also focussing on promoting Navagraha Shrines which connect the villages in Cauvery Delta. The Corporation has also identified 18 lesser known rural areas as they support rural employment and community development. “We are also planning to create facilities to encourage Rural Tourism in areas such as Kalakad, Kadambadi, Nachiar Koil, Pathamadai, Paudur Nadu, Nallichery, Nilavoor, Meenakshipettai and Gandhi Niketan Ashram. Madurai-based Dhan Foundation will train artisans, weavers, farmers, local vendors and service providers in terms of entertaining, marketing and selling their products to the tourists to the region,” informed M Rajaram, Managing Director, TTDC.
