MTDC plans to change 'Deccan Odyssey' current circuit

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is planning to change the circuit of the state’s luxury train — Deccan Odyssey. Although there have been a few speculations about the same in the industry for a while, recently the authorities of MTDC have confirmed it. Currently, the train covers Mumbai - Ganapatiphule (Ratnagiri) - Sindhudurg (Sawantwadi) - Goa - Kolhapur - Pune - Ellora Caves (Aurangabad) - Ajanta Caves (Nashik). MTDC is planning to add Chandrapur and Wardha as well in the circuit, to be operational by October 2009.

Speaking in detail about the project, Vijay Chavan, General Manager, MTDC said, “We are planning to add wildlife sectors in Deccan Odyssey’s circuit. For the same, the Tadoba National Park and Tiger Reserve based in Chandrapur will be added. Inbound tourists will be able to see the wildlife aspect of Maharashtra through this reserve. Since Wardha is a well known place associated with Mahatma Gandhi, I'm sure that the tourists will like to know more about this non-violent freedom fighter of India. We are considering places like Bapu Kuti, Paramdham Ashram, Vishwa Shanti Stup, etc in Wardha for adding it in the circuit. Plans on this front are underway at the moment; once they are confirmed, we will approach the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) to sanction these changes. There are high possibilities that the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) will permit MTDC to change Deccan Odyssey's circuit from next season.”

Apart from making changes in the luxury train’s circuit, MTDC has also started selling it on charter basis. Chavan added, “Luxury trains are only tapping the leisure market. Through the charter services, we are actually tapping the MICE sector. Corporate companies based in Germany, France, UK, US, etc are showing interest in charting out the entire train for certain days. The train also moves to other states and locations as per the corporate’s required itinerary.”

MTDC is also looking at marketing the train aggressively to sell it on a charter basis to the MICE industry for events, incentives and conferences. It is expecting a good response from the international market for this service in the next season.
