Inbound business hit badly in Kerala due to terror attacks in Mumbai

Travel trade in Kerala, one of the three key inbound destinations in India, especially companies offering innovative products and specialising in niche segments have been badly hit on account of the terror attacks in Mumbai and subsequent travel advisories issued by various countries against travel to India. According to a PTI report, most companies are witnessing cancellation of bookings from overseas clients and very few fresh enquiries. Specialist companies are facing rough weather. Travel Planners, a tour operator specialising in South India and Kerala specific holidays has been badly hit by the travel advisories issued against India after the recent Mumbai terror attacks.

The company has witnessed cancellations for bookings for January and February next year for its package, `Weddings in Kerala.’ Launched recently, the package promises a typical traditional Kerala wedding in a temple or any other place of choice of the client. According to P K Anish Kumar, Managing Director, Travel Planners, their company is the first to offer `Weddings in Kerala’ package for which the company has tied-up with Wedding Planners in UK, to organise destination weddings in Kerala. “We have already got at least four cancellations from UK. Some tourists have not confirmed their plans even after enquiries, as well as there have been no new enquiries so far. Earlier, we used to get about 20 to 25 enquiries a day, which has now dwindled to about two a day,” stated Kumar.

The `Weddings in Kerala’ package includes traditionally dressed girls with lamps in their hands to receive guests, ritual arrangements necessary for a marriage, traditional bedroom arrangements, lunch and a dinner party for guests, where food is served on banana leaves. The company also arranges a traditional host marriage treat from a local family, prepares special wedding garlands and a tailor made dress, make up for groom and a Kerala sari for the bride. The charges vary from Rs 25,000 to Rs two lakh, depending on the total number of guests and venue. So far the company has succeeded in solemnising 11 marriages of foreign tourists, including those from Sweden and Scotland.

“The tourists crave for a typical Hindu wedding in Kerala style. Some want it in temples and some in villages of the backwaters. Prior permission has to be sought from temple authorities for conducting a marriage in a temple,” informed Kumar. The company has also introduced the psychosomatic Ayurvedic package, which has become very popular in Switzerland and has also organised 'A Journey of Faith – The journey to Sabarimala Temple,’ a two-day package.
