Hotels take measures to beef up security

With the Mumbai terrorist attacks sending a strong signal to the hospitality industry to strengthen the security system in the hotels, the managements have already taken key steps for the same. The hotels are now marking significant amount of their infrastructure development investments to upgrade their security.

Most hotels are now assessing their security infrastructure. While the hotels have had manual baggage checks in the past, according to various sources in the industry, hotel chains are now in the process of placing orders for baggage screening devices. The number of Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) will also be increased in the properties to monitor staff and guest movements besides having sniffer dogs and door frame metal detectors. Anil Madhok, Managing Director, Sarovar Hotels Pvt Ltd states, “We are installing better security devices in our properties and the guests are also comfortable with the security checks.” New developing hotels are also keen to install enhanced security devices.

The Leela Kempinski Mumbai has also taken several proactive steps to enhance its security measures. “In the current circumstances, we have alerted our security to maintain a stringent level of vigilance,” says Onno Poortier, President, Hotel Leelaventure Limited. He further said that many exit points for guests have been blocked and all entry and exit points are being monitored from one gate. Private cars, taxis and other vehicles are being stopped at the main entrance and guests are being transferred to pre-screened Leela cars. Bonafide identity cards are mandatory for all guests and staff alike. On the other hand, several other hotels have been asked by their higher authorities to refrain from revealing their security enhancement measures.
