GoI to introduce new navigation system at Delhi and Mumbai airports

Government of India (GoI) has decided to introduce a new navigation system at the Delhi and Mumbai airports. It is planning to install Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) at both the airports. GBAS, which is a new technology based on Global Positioning Satellite System, is capable of providing precision approaches to all the runways at an airport where it is installed. This facility is also capable of providing curved approaches in addition to straight-in approaches. According to Minister for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, they will be launching the system in Delhi by June next year and in Mumbai in February 2010. However, the certified system for use by aircraft will only be available by April 2010.
