Swiss International Air Lines to add nine A330-300 aircraft by 2011

Swiss International Air Lines Ltd plans to add a fleet of nine A330-300 aircraft with deliveries commencing from April 2009. The purchased aircraft will be delivered in a phased manner up till 2011. The first of the nine aircraft will be deployed on the Zurich-JFK route, with Dubai following second in May or June 2009. Considering the importance of the India route, the destination has been selected for the third and fourth aircraft deployment which will include Mumbai first followed by Delhi. This would take place around August - September 2009. Talking to TravelBiz Monitor, Jean-Philippe Benoit, General Manager, India, Srilanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, Swiss International Air Lines Ltd mentioned, “The US certainly precedes India due to the huge traffic between the two countries but India potential has been recognized with deployment of aircraft in both cities.”

The airline has purchased all the new aircraft and all the nine that are being deployed on the inter-continental route would have a three class configuration. “The emphasis on a three-class configuration is keeping in mind that we want to position Swiss as a premium airline,” added Benoit. On the India route, the A330-200 (Business Class (48) and Economy (180)) which currently operates on the Mumbai and New Delhi route is a two class configuration. These aircraft will be replaced by the new A330-300 with an increased seat capacity of First Class (8), Business Class (48), Economy (180).

The new fleet will have state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment and will cater to both the business and leisure segment. The airline currently caters to around 55 per cent corporate travel and 45 per cent to leisure. Expanding the frequency on the Indian route, Benoit, mentioned that, “It may be possible that we may decide to expand with a double frequency on existing routes, connect the existing cities in India to other points in Switzerland, or even look at another destination in India. There is no clear project of expanding with our destinations at the moment.”
