MoT approaches UNWTO to upgrade Hotel Management syllabus

In its endeavour to upgrade the hospitality education in India and make it at par with international standards, the Ministry of Tourism has approached the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to recommend ways to improve the syllabus followed by the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), which is affiliated to the National Council of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT). This was annonunced by Sanjay Kothari, Additional Director General (ADG) - Tourism, Government of India. He was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day French Cuisine demonstration-cum-workshop at IHM Pusa, New Delhi recently. Currently, India chairs the world tourism body.

The ADG also said that the Ministry awaits the Finance Ministry’s decision on a proposal to start hospitality management courses in Polytechnics and different Indian universities. He added that as per a survey conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, there will be an annual demand for over two lakh skilled personnel in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Kothari said that the Ministry has been providing all types of assistance to NCHMCT to develop IHMs as Centres of Excellence in India.

Later, speaking to TravelBiz Monitor, Kothari mentioned that the Government is providing states with assistance to establish IHMs. “We want at least one IHM in every state. The bigger states can house more than one. There are IHMs in every state, except for a few in the North-East. These states have to provide a minimum of five acres land free of cost, in order to set up IHMs. We have asked states like Tripura and Manipur to provide land for institutes,” said Kothari.
