Jet and Kingfisher hike fares as fuel prices go up

Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines announced a hike in fares yesterday, which will be effective form today. The increase in the fare was announced after the oil companies increased the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). According to the revised air fares, Jet Airways has increased its domestic Economy Class fares by ten per cent and Business Class fares by five per cent. Kingfisher Airlines, on the other hand has increased only the basic fare by ten per cent in both Economy and Business Classes. However, Deccan which had earlier decided to increase the base fare by ten per cent has taken back the proposal of hiking the base fare by ten per cent. Prakash Mirpuri, Sr. General Manager -Corporate Media Relations, the UB Group said, “We decided to take back the proposal so that the guests can continue to enjoy value flying.”

The 2.8 per cent increase in the ATF price announced by the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will also be effective from today. According to C.V.Prasad, Chairman, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), the market can take an increase of ten per cent in fares. Even though the Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) will stay away from the price hike, the Full Service Carriers (FSCs) will implement it.
