J&K to open up Udhampur-Katra railway link by March 2009

The Indian Railways plan to construct a 345 km long railway line connecting Kashmir Valley with Indian Railways network, which will be operational by March 2009. The Railway Department will build 900 bridges and about 120 km of tunnels along this 345 km stretch. To facilitate execution, the project has been divided into three sub-sections. While construction activities are in progress on the Katra-Quazigund and Quazigund-Srinagar-Baramulla lines, the Udhampur to Katra link has been constructed and is undergoing trial runs.

S.M. Sahni, Joint Director, Directorate of Tourism (J&K Government) said, “We are working with Indian Railways to upgrade the Jammu-Jalandar, single track line to a double track line. In future the state will be connected with trains like Shatabdi Express. The work is going on, but it will take another four to five years for completion.” The Jammu and Kashmir tourism board has also set up sixteen development authorities all over the state to bring infrastructural developments considering the present tourism needs.
