IFC, Rockland Hospitals in a Joint Venture to augment Medical Tourism in India

International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has joined hands with Rockland Hospital to augment facilities currently provided by the hospital in New Delhi and also set-up a hospital in Manesar in Haryana. The Joint Venture project of Rs 250 crore will include building the first phase of the new 250-bed hospital in Manesar. The hospital which will be operational in another two and a half years is located near the proposed Reliance Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway in Haryana and also near Indira Gandhi International Airport. Apart from medical treatment, the hospital will also provide for travel arrangements, airport pick-up and drop, co-ordination of doctors’ appointments, provision of interpreters and arrangements with leading resort chains for post-operative recovery. Rockland Hospitals, which already attracts clients from Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, aims to target patients from other countries.

The hospital will include a dedicated geriatric facility - the Rockland Retreat for `silvers’ (the elderly). “We are planning to build infrastructure to form a network of hospitals through projects in Manesar, Greater Noida, Dwaraka and two other locations. We will also be extending the facilities to our existing hospitals in Delhi. We see the health care business growing fast in India and want to expand our network. The Rockland brand has been in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years; hence we have developed a quality of care which we give our customers. We focus a lot on the service part of it and that will differentiate us from others,” said Umesh Upadhyay, Principal Spokesperson and Director, Rockland Hospital. Networking of the suggested hospitals will be done through satellite units to connect them with general practitioners.

The Group promises to provide best medical services through consultants like eminent orthopaedic surgeon Dr P K Dave, former Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Dr MP Sharma, former Head of Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS. Rockland Hotels is working on renovation of its existing hotels to provide improved services during the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2008. “We are excited to have IFC assist us in expanding our operations. We see IFC as a long-term strategic partner and value its knowledge of the private health care sector in emerging markets,” said Rajesh Srivastava, Chairman, Rockland Hospital.
