Government to develop Cruise Tourism infrastructure through PPP route

The Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways (MoSRH) plans to develop infrastructure at major ports for cruise shipping, through Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode. The Cruise Tourism Policy had been approved by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs last month, as reported by TravelBiz Monitor issue dated July 7, 2008. The Cruise Tourism Policy will be released in the third quarter of this year. The MoSRH will now develop ports in New Mangalore, Marmugao, Kolkata, Andaman and Nicobar and Tuticorin in the next three to four years. Initially, only Chennai, Mumbai, Goa and Kochi ports were to be developed.

The Policy includes exemption from Income Tax, Excise Duty, Customs Duty, Corporate Tax and Service Tax for cruise operators. The other areas highlighted in the policy include immigration facilities, customs clearance and dedicated cruise terminals to augment cruise tourism in India. It will be ensured that immigration formalities are completed in less than an hour from cruise passengers disembarking from the ship. With these measures the government hopes to increase cruise passenger landings to one million by 2010 from the current less than 1, 00,000 landings. The Cabinet is also likely to approve three more waterways as national waterways, which will further boost cruise tourism. Currently there are three national waterways in the country.
