Dubai targets 10 million visitors by 2010

India is one of the top five markets for Dubai in terms of visitor arrivals. This statement can be substantiated with the visitor arrivals for India, which stand at over 4,10,000 for 2007 and a target of 20 per cent increase for this year. These projections are keeping in mind, Dubai’s target of 10 million tourists by 2010. The destination is gearing up through its infrastructure to cater to these numbers. The projects that one can look forward to are the Dubai Metro, which should be operational by 2009, more hotels, especially budget hotels and special projects. This will also include the building and completion of the new low cost terminal at Jebel Ali called the JBX, which is being built to cater to 30 million passengers annually. The destination also plans to use many events to promote and increase tourist numbers such as the Dubai Shopping Festival, the Dubai Summer Surprises and many sporting events.

In addition to all the new development, the India office has many plans for the coming months to keep Dubai in the forefront. Talking about the initiatives, Carl Vaz, Director, Dubai Representative Office in India, DTCM (Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing) says, “The focus now will be special short holidays promoting the festive seasons. With regards to this, we are working with specific tour operators and will be announcing our partners soon. The festive seasons that we are targeting are Diwali, Durga Puja, Christmas and New Year. The idea of launching this concept was to cash in on the festive holidays. We will be conducting these festivals in Dubai such as Dandiya in the desert or lamp lighting on the Dhow Cruise and much more. Through these events we would also look at merging cultures.”

Apart from just targeting the festive season, a lot of B2C promotions have been lined up such as in-store promotions, as well as plans are afoot to launch the Dubai Expert Programme, which is the online specialist programme for the destination. The year 2009 will also have DTCM conduct their road shows across the country but this time it will be in two installments, March and April. One month DTCM will have road shows in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata while the second month will be Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. “Mumbai has been selected in both months as it is one of our main markets,” adds Vaz.
