Bangladesh government to promote tourism in the country

In a bid to promote tourism, the Bangladesh government plans to form two travel bodies by the end of this month, one of which will deal with granting licenses to upcoming travel agents while the other will handle the promotion and marketing of tourism activities in the country. The Dhaka Travel Fair will also be held from August 21 to 24. The travel and tourism trade in Bangladesh is aggressively promoting beaches, hills and heritage sites in North Bengal. “The heritage sites in Bangladesh can improve tourist arrivals to the country. Varendra Museum, Choto Sona Mosque, Puthia Palace, Kantajee temple and Taj Hat Palace are crowd pullers,” said Syed G Qadir, Vice President and General Manager, Galaxy Holiday who is also founder member of Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB). The Bangladesh government is also planning to make amendments in the tourism policy.

The hospitality industry in Bangladesh is also witnessing a growth in the number of hotels that cater to tourists needs. Radisson Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka has been operational since the last two years while Westin Hotel has come up recently in the capital. Hilton Hotels is under construction while many small budget hotels are also expected to come up in the next two years. Apart from Dhaka, other destinations like Chittagong, which is Bangladesh’s main seaport and its second-largest city and Sylhet, which is known for picturesque rolling hills, such as the Jaintia and Khasia hills, are also being promoted. Sylhet is also famed for its tea, pineapple and orange gardens. “Bangladesh as a destination has a lot to offer. It is the land of rivers, all it needs is organised product research and development,” concluded Qadir.
