Gulf Air suspends Bangalore and Hyderabad operations till October 24, 2009

Gulf Air, the national carrier of Kingdom of Bahrain suspended its operations from Bangalore and Hyderabad effective March 29, 2009 till October 24, 2009. The airline operated daily flights from Bangalore and five times a week from Hyderabad. However, the airline is keen on expanding its operations in other parts of India considering the growing demand in the market. Richard Hirsch, Regional General Manager – Indian Subcontinent, Gulf Air said, “We have temporarily suspended our services to two cities in India due to prevailing adverse market conditions, but our future plans for India remain the same. We see a real growth opportunity in working closely with eight or nine traditional international airports, investing on the possibility of developing services to some of the new international designated airports.”

Passengers who purchased the airline tickets for travel during the suspension period have been given various options by the airline. Passengers can choose to travel to/from another destination in the Gulf Air network (Any additional fare and taxes for the new journey will be payable and any reduction in fare will be refundable). Secondly, passengers can travel via Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi or Trivandrum connecting the Gulf Air services on Jet Airways, Air India or Indian Airlines. Passengers can choose to receive a full refund with any cancellation fees waived.

the airline is keen on expanding its operations to Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc. within few years. The airline is currently in bilateral talks with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to increase services and capacities on the India – Gulf route. According to Hirsch, the link between India and Middle East is a key route regionally and will bounce back fast as bilateral investment continues. He said, “There has always been a strong volume of traffic between Bahrain and India, which Gulf Air has grown with since our first operations in 1971. Load factors for India have historically been strong (as high as 80 per cent to 90 per cent), but there are seasonal variances. We are coming in to the summer months, which has traditionally been stronger flying to India than from India as many Indian nationals working in the Gulf take their annual vacation. We anticipate it to be similar this year, but there is more capacity than demand right now, so it’s a good time for customers to get great value fares.”
